This paper deals with a number of issues which can ultimately be used for development of effective algorithms for lossless compression of digitized images. The issues discussed are: (1) What are the different types of entropies? (2) How effective are the existing compression algorithms as compared to the entropy of images? (3) How can the entropy of an image be reduced, and how does it affect the compression ratio of each algorithm? (4) How could this information be used to develop more effective compression algorithms? Analytical experiments are used to assist in analysis of the above issues. 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
