โœฆ Synopsis

A marked decrease in S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) content and a significant decrease in methionine and glutathione contents in the LEC rat liver were observed between the 8th and 12th weeks before start of spontaneous hepatitis. The decreased levels were enhanced by an ethionine or choline-deficient diet, and changes were associated with a decrease in AdoMet synthetase expression at both the protein and mRNA levels as determined by Western blot and Northern blot experiments. These results suggest that a congenital disorder in methionine metabolism enhances the development of spontaneous hepatitis and hepatoma in LEC rats.

We examined the effect of consumption of graded increases of dietary fiber (soft white wheat bran) on the development of mammary gland carcinomas in intact female Sprague-Dawley rats during the promotion stage of carcinogenesis, induced with 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA). The percent of rats
