For some years thiourea has been known as a stimulant of the germination of photosensitive lettuce seed (T~o~soN and KosAa 1938). Amongst urea derivatives, it has been considered to be the only compound capable of this stimulation; other ureas or thioureas being inactive or inhibitory (T~o~eso~ and KOSAR 1939; MAYER 1956). This apparent requirement for thionrea has been the basis for the extensive use of this compound as a potential key to the mechanisms of the physiological and biochemical processes involved in the dormancy and germination of lettuce seed (see for example
