✦ Synopsis
Cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 20 patients with scleroderma were shown to produce high levels of interleukin-la, interleukin-lp, and tumor necrosis factor a. There were positive correlations between the production of these 3 molecules. Purified monocytes from these patients produced much more tumor necrosis factor a than did those from normal subjects, even without lipopolysaccharide stimulation. These results show the hyperactivity of monocytes from scleroderma patients.
Diffuse or perivascular cellular infiltration is often observed in either the dermis or the subcutaneous tissues of patients with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis; SSc). These infiltrates have been shown to predominantly consist of either T lymphocytes or both .

Interaction of macrophages (Møs) with polyetherurethane (PEU) was investigated to clarify the role of the Møs in the early stage of tumorigenesis of PEUs. As for the inflammatory cytokines produced from Møs, the amount of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) produced on three PEUs (PU-4, 6, and 8) was simila
