This patent describes a tandem radial shaft seal that is specifically designed for automotive cooling systems. A partial vacuum may be applied to the system for leak testing and then filling. This can cause a conventional lip seal to vent air inwards. This seal has a support ring on the atmospheric

✦ Synopsis
For years seal makers have machined profiles into seal faces to promote the formation of a lubricating film and, in some cases, to directly remove the heat generated at the face. The additional leakage from such seals however has tended to limit their use to non-volatile applications. Advances in laser technology now make it possible to produce a structured surface on the seal faces. This improves the lubrication between the seal faces and has the novel effect of pumping the lubricating film back into the sealed fluid and hence limiting emissions.
