✦ Synopsis
biotech production. The big event at the present time is the development of cellulases to make sugars from cellulose, the sugars then being converted into ethanol for use as fuel. The new US energy law includes a renewable fuels standard that requires that 75 bn gal/y ethanol are blended with gasoline by 2012. Around 12 bn gals of ethanol are made globally at present and around 4 bn gals in the US, with almost all of it produced from corn starch. Worldwide demand for bioethanol is expected to reach 30 bn gal/y by 2020.
