In "Engeland, Engeland' van Julian Barnes bedenkt een roekeloze zakenman een groots project waarmee hij zijn carriΓ¨re kan afsluiten. Het eiland Wight wordt opgekocht en omgebouwd tot een historisch themapark: replica's van onder andere de Big Ben, Stonehenge en de Krijtrotsen van Dover worden opgetrokken, traditionele Engelse gebruiken door acteurs nagespeeld en de koning en koningin (naar wordt gefluisterd de echte) ingezet. Een mekka voor toeristen, die dan ook in drommen komen kijken hoe Robin Hood en zijn trawanten de rijken bestelen en de dorpsgek weer ronddoolt. Het project is monsterlijk, riskant, Engelser dan het origineel β en een daverend succes. Terwijl het pretpark op het eiland de onafhankelijkheid afkondigt en toenadering zoekt tot de Europese Unie, raakt het oude Engeland in voorindustrieel verval en verder geΓ―soleerd van het continent.
