Growth patterns of surface cracks in plates subjected to combined cyclic tension and bending are examined. Different methods of prediction of the aspect ratio variability of these surface cracks are compared with experimental data. The objective is to identify the most accurate method. The compariso

โฆ Synopsis
Abstr&-There is a dramatic change in the shape of the semi-elIiptiad surface cracks, growing due to combined cyclic bending and tensile loading of plam. It is possibk to predict the change of aspect ratio (o/c) during the propagation of the crack. The growing cracks change their shapes such that they follow pmf& propagation patterns (PPPs). Some of the important characteristics during crack propagation are determined. In particular, strain euergy release rata (G) variation during crack growth is presented and discus&. It is shown that the shape of any growing crack changes such that G for the crack tries to converge to the prefezmd propagation trend. Also, some of the geometrical variations during the propagation of the cracks are discussed.

Cyclic growth rate of a surface crack is complicated by the three dimensional stress field around the crack and also by an interaction expected between the growth rate at every position on the contour. An analysis, based on the total energy around a smfoce crack, derived a correlation between strain
