✦ Synopsis

A total of 4154 samples of hay made on commercial farms between 1984 and 1995 were analysed to investigate the annual variation in protein and energy content. The average crude protein (CP) content was 96 (s.d. 29•1) g/kg d.m. and predicted metabolizable energy (ME) 8•8 (s.d. 0•77) MJ/kg d.m. There was significant (P(0•001) year-to-year variation in CP and ME content. The results indicated that the average quality was moderate, because the hay was usually made from mature herbage which had been weathered in the field during making.
