Gas

-phase azulene molecules were prepared with 17200 cm-' vibrational energy in the Su state by laser excitation of the St state and subsequent internal conversion. Rates of vibrational energy removal (for several collision partners) were determined from the decay of the CHstretch fluorescence at 3.3 pm. A stepladder model indicates each azulene-azulene collision removes 3500 cm-' of vrbrational energy.
