✦ Synopsis

We have measured the energy gap of an ultrasmall superconducting ring by using small tunnel junctions.

Transitions between different quantum states were observed. The transition points at low temperatures agree well with the theoretical prediction, while those at higher temperatures are in the region of the normal state in the theory of the usual Little-Parks effect.
