β¦ Synopsis
Non-linear thermal diffusion theory is employed to evaluate the rates of atomic mixing across interfaces between different materials induced by thermal spikes which develop from high energy deposition density conditions during ion irradiation. Mass transport is considered for the cases of atomic diffusion and viscous flow and the effect of the heat of mixing of the components is included. It is shown that both linear and power law dependencies on the system energy parameters can result from different choices of the behaviour of the thermal diffusion and that a viscous flow model is in better agreement with experimental results.
