Mesopontine cholinergic cells in the pedunculopontine tegmental (PPT) nuclei modulate the control of the wake-sleep cycle by releasing acetylcholine to their target structures. These cells also synthesize nitric oxide (NO) which diffuses into the extracellular space and acts as a neuronal messenger.
