Abstract
The distribution of end‐to‐end distances in liquid short‐chain molecules has been studied by means of X‐ray diffraction. Solutions in n‐decane of α,ω‐diiodo‐n‐alkanes have been investigated.
The distribution of intramolecular I‐I distances in these compounds was obtained by comparing the experimental X‐ray patterns of the diiodides with the pattern of a monoiodide solution having the same iodine‐to‐carbon ratio. Although the smallness of the observed effect renders the conclusions rather uncertain, the results are in general agreement with a distribution function calculated from a simple theoretical model.
