✦ Synopsis

The enantiomeric composition of sesquiterpene and diterpene hydrocarbons in the foliage oils of three different Araucaria species was investigated by enantioselective gas chromatography. Enantiomeric mixtures were observed in both the sesquiterpene and diterpene series. The application of enantioselective gas chromatography for stereochemical analysis of diterpenes is demonstrated. In addition to diterpene hydrocarbons, both enantiomers of manoyl oxide, 13-epi-manoyl oxide and sclareol could be separated by capillary gas chromatography using cyclodextrin derivatives as chiral stationary phases.

Sesquiterpenes like germacrene D are naturally occurring in plants, bacteria, fungi, and marine invertebrates. They are important flavor compounds and may be active as antibiotics, insect repellents, attractants, or pheromones or may be produced in response to attacking herbivores. Sesquiterpene syn

## Abstract **BACKGROUND:** Carnosic acid and carnosol, the two major phenolic diterpenes present in rosemary and sage extracts, have received attention in food science and biomedicine because of their potent antioxidant properties. In plants, these compounds have been identified as being present i
