Abstract

In 2004, QUALCOMM faced a thorny question: Would tinkering with its Total Rewards offerings—especially its attractive health care programs—to control rising health care costs also impair its ability to aggressively recruit and successfully retain the talent that sustains its stellar record of innovation? Leaving nothing to chance, the company used employees' input and a trade‐off analysis to assess the economic and strategic impact of reward changes, and in the process learned the true value of its investments in Total Rewards. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
