✦ Synopsis

A collisional relaxation study of nitrogen in a supersonic helium discharge is presented. The discussion centers on spectra resulting from the Peting ionization reaction between nitrogen and metastable helium at selected points of the expansion core. The intensity distribution of the fust negative group is used to calculate the u"distribution of Ns(X 'Z: , v" ). This is feasible due to the "vertical" nature of the penning ionization and the availability of all necessary Franck-Condon factors and Einstein wefticients. The results prove interesting as a propensity rule appears to govern the distribution of N,(X 'Es+, I!') in the supersonic expansion. In particular, population of the even-numbered v" levels is favored during collisions between Ns(X 'El, v") and excited nitrogen discharge species prior to expansion.
