✦ Synopsis

R&d manuscript received 21 June 1974

Measkments of deay time, temperature dependence and spectrum of the fluorescence emission of vacuum-deposite+ tetracene f&ns are reported. It is concluded that the emitting species is a molecular pair in sandwich con-Iiguration.

In general organic molecular crystals exhibit extimer fluorescence if .ihe crystal structure is dimeric. in-nature as in pyrene and perylene in its /3-modification' [l] . In monomeric crystals excimer emission on-Ii appears if the crystal structure is rne~hanically perturbed, e.g., by applying external pressure [2,3] . In

Interacting pairs of tetracene molecules are prepared in a PMMA host matrix by photodecomposition of ditetracene at 15 K. Excitation and emission spectra of these pairs are red-shifted and broadened relative to those of isolated tetracene molecules under the same conditions. No differences are seen
