Lessing planificó «Emilia Galotti» con diez años de antelación. El drama encarna un tema de la literatura romana tardía: la virginidad. Aunque el amor es un tema central de la tragedia, sobre todo se ha de considerar una obra con carga política, pues frente al estilo de la nobleza se defiende la moral burguesa ilustrada, entonces en auge. El joven Príncipe de Guastalla, desbordado por responsabilidades de gobierno, está, desde su primer encuentro con la burguesa Emilia Galotti poseído por el deseo. Por ello da libertad de acción al Marqués Marinelli, su intrigante ayuda de cámara, para impedir la inminente boda de Emilia con el Conde Appiani. La construcción de la tragedia es magistral. Lleva el drama alemán a un punto culmen que no había tenido antes. Lo más brillante es el diálogo enérgico, compacto, ingenioso. Resulta ser un modelo para todos tanto del momento, como posteriormente. «Emilia Galotti» es un drama ilustrado que recoge la poética de Johann Christoph Gottsched pero contradice los modelos franceses vigentes en el teatro del momento así como las pautas de las tablas alemanas de la época.
