โœฆ Synopsis

Emerging Technologies

5.1 Clean World Innovations and EncapSol

Two technologies we have identified that are promising for combating oil spills are an enzyme-based technology developed by Clean World Innovations (CWI) and an encapsulation technology marketed under the name EncapSol. Both technologies are in a state of commercial readiness and have been demonstrated at limited commercial scales.

Both technologies were originally developed to target environmental clean-up applications. However, they have evolved to address different target markets that are broader and more sustainable. The CWI technology focuses on water quality and wastewater purification. The EncapSol technology is also capable of tackling this market but is poised to also address oil recovery from tar sands and other media. Both technologies seem applicable to responding to marine oil spills.

Both technologies compete with surfactant-based technologies, which have received significant attention within the past few years. Surfactant-based technologies have the potential to recover oil

Myopic planning and tactical decision-making with regards to oil spill events result in severely inefficient cleanup efforts with high fixed, operating and cleanup/damage costs. We propose an integrated framework that addresses some important strategic issues such as determining the optimal location
