✦ Synopsis
Routine serological screening for enteropathogenic E. co5 (EPEC) serogronps has largely been abandone~L Although the availability of appropriate antisera has more recently been problematic, it was apparent that many, ffnot most, putatively pathogenic serotypus were being isolated from patients who did not suffer from an acute gnstroenteritis. A chromosomal gene cluster (cue), which is associated with one EPEC virolence factor, namely intestinal attachment and effacement in vivo and localized adherence in vitro, has been recently defined. We sought to determine the frequency of one consistent gene in this cluster (ene A) among previnusly designated EPEC serogroups. Heat-Ireated, proteinase K digested crude whole cell lysates were subjected to amplification of a conserved region of eae A with the polymerase chain reaction. An 854 bp product was visualized by ¢thidiam bromide staining after agarnse gel electrophoresis. 102 bacterial isolates were assayed; in total, 34% yielded the eae A product.
