✦ Synopsis
In non-suppressed ion chromatography with conductimetric detection, an eluent should fulfil the following conditions for sensitive analysis: low background conductance, high eluent strength, low pH for anions of strong acids, etc. However, these conditions have not been fulfilled by using conventional organic acid eluents because one condition is often in conflict with the others (e.g., an eluent of low pH is usually very weak).
Polyol-borate eluents were investigated in order to obtain a sensitive eluent, and it was found that tartrate-borate eluent is suitable because it has a high eluent strength and a low background conductance at low pH. The eluent characteristics of tartrate-borate solution and its usefulness for anion chromatography are demonstrated.
