Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903) was the greatest American mathematician and physicist of the nineteenth century. He was a pioneer of vector analysis, but his deepest work was in the development of thermodynamics and statistical physics. This book, first published in 1902, gives his mature vision of these subjects.
About the Author
In 1863 Yale University awarded J. Willard Gibbs (1839โ1903) the first American doctorate in engineering. Professor of Mathematical Physics at Yale from 1871 until 1903, Gibbs made important theoretical contributions to many areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering. Together with James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann, he was instrumental in creating the discipline of statistical mechanics.
