✦ Synopsis
An interesting result derived from the microscopical examination of the structure after 25 percent cold work of an unalloyed, purely pearlitic steel, consisting of two phases but of a single structure element. The examination was carried out on a section parallel to the pressure direction. In some pearlite packets the cementite lamellae were broken, in others bent in wavelike form (Fig, l), and consequently the cementite lamellae were deformed to some degree. It is possible that the cementite lamellae are broken too; however, fractures were not detectible even by an objective of numerical aperture 1.3. The microphotograph shown in Fig. 2 is most surprising. In the pearlite packet parallel-or in some places nearly parallel-shear traces (slip planes) appeared on the surface of the metallographic specimen, passing through the whole packet. Now and then parts of the pearlite packet are displaced, as compared with other parts, in a distance of half width of the ferrite lamellae.
