✦ Synopsis
Aluminum(III) complexes formed by the isoÑavone biochanin-A and the Ñavones kaempeferol and quercetin in and the mixed solvents
(1/1 v/v), were investigated by means of electrospray mass CH
OH spectrometry (ES-MS) and UV/visible absorbance spectrophotometry. Electrospray mass spectra of solutions that were indicated by their UV/visible spectra to have formed an Al-Ñavonoid complex displayed singly-charged ions corresponding in m/z to the 1 : 2, dimeric complex, viz., L = (Ñavonoid Ô H')-. Lesser abundant singly-[ AlL 2 ] ', charged ions corresponding in m/z to [ AlR(L) ] ', where R = H-, HO-or were also sometimes observed. CH 3 O-Formation of the 1 : 2 complex was favored in relative to all other solvent systems investigated. The CH 3 OH relative amounts of complexed and free Ñavonoid in solution, as estimated by the appearance of the UV/visible spectra, correlated well with the abundance ratio of the 1 : 2, Al-Ñavonoid dimer to the protonated Ñavonoid (indicative of free Ñavonoid) observed in the ES mass spectrum of the same solution.

The recent development of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has allowed its use to study molecular interactions driven by non-covalent forces. ESI-MS has been used to detect non-covalent complexes between proteins and metals, ligands and peptides and interactions involving DNA, RNA,
Electrospray mass spectrometric (ESMS) studies of solutions of alkali metal chlorides have shown that the value of the solvation energy is a key parameter in the ion yield in ESMS. The ESMS response factor, 4, of the ion is linked to the solvation energy, EM, of the ion by a simple mathematical rela
