Cathodic reduction of the tetraalkyl-1,3-cyclobutanediones in the presence of acetic anhydride does not result in the formation of bicyclo[ 1.1 .O]butane derivatives. Instead, the corresponding 3-acetoxycyclobutanones and bicyclo[2.2.1]hexane-Zones are obtained.
