โฆ Synopsis
The effect of the application of an electric field on the filtration efficiency of a variety of fibrous materials against an aquasol of negatively-charged polystyrene latex particles has been investigated. The bulk of the study concerned "Actilex B701", an anion-exchanging fibre of high water content, moderate ionic conductivity and a positive surface charge. Other fihres of varying ionic and electrical conductivity that were investigated were treated with a cationic polyelectrolyte in order to produce a positive surface charge. On the application of an electric field the collector efficiency increased linearly with field strength in accordance with classical theory for electrostatically-augmented aerosol deposition.
However, quantitative agreement with theory was poor. The rate of change of the collector efficiency with the field strength was found to be more weakly dependent on the electrical and dielectric conductivity of the fibre than theory dictates. Maximum efficiencies were obtained for a co-flow, parallel electric field in conjunction with the Actilex B701 fibre. Lower efficiencies were obtained from both highly electrically conducting and insulating fihres.
