✦ Synopsis

Evidence from a number of studies indicates that carcinomas of various origins produce very high molecular weight, highly glycosylated glycoproteins. These so-called mucins have been found associated with mammary, pancreatic, colonic, ovarian, and other carcinoma cells and tumor tissues of human origin [ 1-61. They were also found in the circulating blood of patients with carcinoma [7-111. In many cases, specific monoclonal antibodies generated against carcinoma cells or purified glycolipid antigens were shown to recognize antigenic epitopes expressed on the mucin carbohydrate chains.
