✦ Synopsis

Abstraet--A number of polystyrene resins with nominal crosslink ratios of 5~,09/o have been prepared, chlorobenzoylated and chloromethylated. The degrees of functionalization achieved are dependent on the crosslink ratios of the resins. Analysis of the results obtained from specific reaction conditions suggests that substitution occurs preferentially on unencumbered pendant aromatic groups rather than on those already carrying an ethyl or additional polymer chain substituent. * Percentage of groups (1) + ( ) + (3) successfully chloromethylated. $ Molar ratio (I) + (2) + (3)/ chloromethyl ethyl ether/SnCl4: 1/1.8/0.9.

Recently we have had occasion to carry out a number of experiments very similar to those reported by Biswas and Chatterjee and wish to point out an important omission in their paper. We have acylated linear polystyrene (MW -100,000) using both phthalic and succinic anhydrides in nitrobenzene, and Al
