โœฆ Synopsis

An optoacoustzc technique IS shown to gve accurate results for the extent of viirationai excltatton m electrornc-viirationai energy Qansfer. The system studied IS I(2P,,2)-Hz, and it IS shown that w&m experunental error the transfer 1s exctusively to the Ha@" = 2) viirational state. Unhke other methods which are dependent on the acceptor molecule showing mfrared enussion, the technique is of general apphcabzhty. The deactivation rate of the excited state (2P,,2) of the iodine atom in gas-phase colhsions wrth molecular hydrogen is well studied. The three most recent [l-3] determinations of the associated rate constant are in good a~eement, yieldmg an average, value of (1.2 k 0.2) X lo-l3 cm3 molecde-l s-l_ The me&-
