✦ Synopsis

It has been suggested that the Lewis octet of electrons should be treated as a double quartet rather than as four pairs. This leads to the view that the electronic structures of many molecules and radicals can be described better in terms of bonds containing an odd number of electrons. 1 The application of this hypothesis to the structure and reactions of a number of organic molecules is presented.
