Energy loss spectra of 4.0 MeV helium ions after penetrating through liquid phase ethanol have been measured at scattering angles from 10 to 50 mrad. Experimental data were fitted with Monte Carlo simulations using a GEANT4 toolkit, and stopping cross-sections were deduced in an energy range from 1.

The modified Firsov model has been applied to the calculation of the electronic stopping cross-section of compounds for low energy protons by using molecular orbitals.
