β¦ Synopsis
The characteristic features of the metal-insulator transttion of quasi-one-dimensional conductors, (DCNQI)zCu, have been explained as being due to the unique cooperative onset of the Peierls transition and the Mott transition. It is also proposed that the reentrant metallic state results from the crossover between classical and quantum regimes of the tunneling processes of the rotational motions of radicals.

Using XPS and UPS photoelectron spectroscopy, we have studied the electronic structure of single-crystalline needles of 20 5-M-, 2-Br+M-and 2,5-DM-substituted (DCNQI),Cu charge-transfer salts, prepared in situ. The results indicate that the oxidation state of the counterion is Cu+. The electronic st
