✦ Synopsis
Polarized S-S absorption spectra of a-nuphtol single crystals show that the first two electronic absorption systems are respectively lcng-asir and short-axis polarized (A' +A') trnrxitions. The polarized absorp:ion spectra of a-nophtol in a diphcnyl has1 cryml, hon'ever, show that the first electronic transition of the cr-nuphtol molecule is not exactly tion_c the long ask, but sliphtly bent rewards the short axis of the molecule.

The single crystal absorption spectra of p-benzoquinonc and toluquinone have been observed at 4.2OK for three perpendicular directions of polarization. The electronic otQins of the two n-n\* transitions are located; their separation amounts to 255 cm-\* inp-benzoquinone and 560 cm-l in toluquinone.
Photoionization and optical absorption of singlet excitons in a t-stilbene crystal have been studied. The ionization effkiency of the singlet exciton is a constant over the energy range of 5.4-6.5 eV. This is another example indicating that autoionization after a rapid relaxation is a common behavio
