✦ Synopsis
The electronic Raman (ER) spectrum of terbium gallium garnet, recorded using picosecond radiation from the frequencydoubled output of a Nd:YAG laser is reported. The observed spectral bands with frequency shifts up to 6000 cm-' are the result of the effect of a strong crystal field which causes J-mixing between the 'F 6.5, .,, states. The site symmetry of Tb3+ in the garnet can be confirmed from this spectroscopy.
