✦ Synopsis
Reaction of iron powder with 1,3,4,7-tetramethylisoindole at 355O affords the square planar mmplex otiamethyitetrabenzporphyrinin(IIl, whose magnetic moment indicates a spin quintet ground state. MSssbauer measurements at 4.2"K in an applied ma netic field of 50 kG show that the electric fieldgradient at iron is positive and axially symmetric, consistent with a B Bzg ground term. The bistetrahydrofuran adduct is aIso high spin, whereas the bispyridine adduct is diamagnetic with 'Algground state. Comparisons are made with data for the related tetraphenylporphiniroicon-(II) and phtbalocyanineiron(I1) derivatives.
