β¦ Synopsis
Energy transfer from optically pumped metastable Mg('P) atoms to Sm has been observed in a slow-flow, high-temperature refractory vessel. The rate constant for excitation transfer has been measured to be (I .6 k 0.5) X 10m9 cm' s-l. The relative densities of the excitedsm states in the presence of Ar carrier gas has also been determined.

A laser-mduced fluorescence techmque has been used to measure the rate of the energy-transfer reaction Ca(3P) f Sr('S) = Ca('S) + Sr(3P). Rates for quenching SrCP) by mert gases were also measured and correlated with an orbitmg model.
Collisional transfer of electronic energy from spin-orbit excited chlorine atoms, Cl\* [ ~P'(~P,,~) ] (E=882 cm-'), to vibrational energy in SOz has been observed by time-resolved infrared fluorescence from the fundamental SOI stretching levels. The rate constant ( k la) for Cl\* quenching by SO2 at
