โœฆ Synopsis

CePdAI with hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure is a new antiferromagnetically ordered heavy fermion compound (TN = 2.7 K). We present results of electrical res!stivity and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline CePdAI.

1. Introduction 2. Experimental

Recently, CePd2AI3, crystallizing in the hexagonal PrNi2AI3-type structure, was reported to be a new antiferromagnetically ordered heavy fermion compound (TN = 2.8 K) [1]. The observed strong sample dependence of magnetic properties at low temperatures i2-4] suggests that CePd2AI3 is close to the magnetic-to-nonmagnetic boundary in the Kondo-lattice phase diagram. Studies of related ternary compounds, like CePdAI, are important to clarify the origin of the sample dependence observed in CePd2AIa.

The nuclear structure of CePdAI has been determined by X-ray I-5] and neutron diffraction experiments [6] to be of the ZrNiAI type (hexagonal space group P62m with sites (3f) occupied by Ce, (la) and (2d) by Pd and (3g) by AI). Above 120 K the magnetic susceptibility of CePdA1 1"51 follows the Curie-Weiss law ,x,;th ,~.
