โฆ Synopsis
An electron transport through a quantum wire with a constriction is studied in the framework of a microscopic approach. We find two qualitatively different types of behaviour depending on the strength of the barrier at the constriction. For high barriers the DC conductance tends to zero with decrease of temperature, whereas for low barriers it remains finite. We associate this result with the different character of electromagnetic excitations created by electrons propagating through the system in these two cases.
