Electron spin resonance (ESR) and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) measurements were performed for the cation radicals obtained from the model compounds of c~-, #-, 3'and 6-tocopherol (vitamin E) by oxidizing the tocopherol precursors in an AICI3-CHaCI a solution. TheESR spectrum of the radical cation of 3-methylpentane (3-MP) in CFC12CF2Cl has been obtained. The spectrum is almost identical to that for the 2-methylbutane radical cation. From the spectral analysis it is concluded that 3-MP+ has a GT skeletal conformation and the unpaired electron is confined

The role of alkyl substitution on the electronic structure of cyclohexane radical cation was investigated with low-temperature matrix ESR and semiempirical MO calculations. It was found that the unpaired electron, which is originally delocalized throughout the cyclohexane ring, tends to be confined
