✦ Synopsis
The solution of the time-dependent Schro ¨dinger equation for an electron confined in a potential well created by a semiconductor heterostructure in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field and laser radiation is studied. Quasi-energies in a ''Gaussian" well, calculated in the Kramers-Henneberger approximation for different intensities of the incident radiation are reported. A symmetry breaking in the quasi-energy spectra for intensities greater than a critical value is observed. The validity of the Kramers-Henneberger approximation is analyzed.
