✦ Synopsis

Evidence from electron paramagnetic resonance is presented for the stabilisation of 241Am in the Sf 67s' configuration in a BaCOs lattice. This has been concluded from the large hyperline constant and the similarity of the g value with that reported for gas-phase Pu II. The stabilisation of the 5f67s' configuration is considered as due to the overlap of the 7s orbital of Am with s-like orbitals of a trapped electron at a nearby oxygen vacancy.
