## Abstract From energy loss measurements of fast electrons on solid neon and methane the energy loss functions Im (−1/ε) and the dielectric constants ε = ε~1~ + __i__ε~2~ are calculated. The ε~2~‐spectra of the solids are compared with the energy loss spectra of gaseous Ne and CH~4~.
