Electron cooling is a well-established technique to increase the phase space density of particle beams in storage rings. In this paper, we discuss the feasibility of electron and positron cooling of ions in a Penning trap. We calculate the cooling times for the cases of trapped bare ions with nuclea

β¦ Synopsis
The ESR storage ring offers the unique opportunity to store and cool fully stripped heavy ions up to Uranium at energies between 50 and 370 MeV/u. Measurements of the longitudinal cooling force for several ion species from C 6+ to U g2+ are presented. A pronounced deviation from the expected q2 scaling was found. Further investigations have been performed to study the influence of magnetic field strength on the longitudinal co()ling force.

Ion traps and storage rings provide unique experimental conditions for the study of the properties of stable or radioactive, singly or highly charged ions. Storage of the confined particles for extended periods of times and cooling are the key issues for extremely high accuracy and sensitivity. At m
This paper will concentrate on the present state of the art of one type of highly charged ion sources used as injectors in cyclotrons and linacs, the electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS), summarizing general design principles and presenting technical innovations applied in the constructio
