✦ Synopsis

This paper reports some significant characteristics of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted from commercially pure aluminium strips under opening and shearing modes of fracture at elevated temperatures. It is observed that elevated temperatures affect only the kHz component frequency of EMR, the MHz component in opening mode remains uninfluenced. Shearing mode of fracture did not emit any MHz component frequency EMR signal. EMR characteristics have been observed to change remarkably when aluminium strip is heated to 150 • C and above, prior to the test, under both opening and shearing modes of fracture. Further, the EMR characteristics are in several ways entirely opposite in the opening and shearing modes of fracture. These results are expected to give an insight into the dislocation kinematics within the metallic materials at elevated temperatures.
