✦ Synopsis

Using the Lifshitz electromagnetic theory a general expression is derived for the lateral force on a single spherical atom and a paraboloidal nanoasperity moving near the surface. For the first time it is shown that the sign of the force can be both negative and positive, depending on the dielectric properties of the tribopartners.
