โฆ Synopsis
Recent designs for a superconducting power transmission cable consider a flexible system in which the current is carried in a layer of wires or strips, each having a superconducting surface, laid on the surface of a tube. Subdivision of the conductor in this way causes an enhancement of electric and magnetic fields, and of ac losses. The case considered here is when the individual conductors are round wires. Field enhancements are calculated and used to determine ac loss enhancements. These are averaged over the conductor surface to give an overall loss enhancement factor for the cable. Results are presented to cover a wide range of situations.
