โœฆ Synopsis

Results

are reported for an investigation of the processes contributing to the anodic and cathodic "off-gases" in the electrolysis of the molten ternary eutectic, (Li, Na, K/C03 at 500ยฐC. with a compartmented electrolysis cell, and an on-stream gas chromatographic technique. At low cds and low polarization, the discharge of oxide to Oa is the only anodic process; as the cd and polarization are increased, carbonate discharge contributes to the anodic reaction and finally dominates the anodic process. The cathodic discharge of carbonate, producing CO, was coniirmed, and is in good correspondence to the thermodynamic predictions. Some Hs evolution is noted at the cathod:; this may be attributed to the presence of moisture or hydroxide in the molten electrolyte as contamtmutt.

RCsun&
