โฆ Synopsis
The problem of stability of superposed viscous liquids subj ect simultaneously to electric and magnetic fields is investigated using the normal mode analysis. A configuration of an eleetrieally conducting liquid topped by a dielectric liquid is envisaged in a a downward gravity field. The electric Iield is assumed along the gravity iield, while the magnetic field is taken to be either along or normal to the electric fiel& Criteria of instability are derived in both cases. It is found that a vertical electric field has a destabilizing influence and renders an otherwise stable conIiguration (bottom heavy arrangement) unstable for small wavelengths, while the effeet of the magnetic field is stabilizing.
