Abstract

Electrochemical reduction of 4,4β€²,‐diacetyldiphenylethane at mercury in 80% ethanol/1__M__ potassium acetate produced the pinacols in high yield by the one‐electron/one proton reduction of the carbonyl groups. Although polarographic analysis indicated essentially complete conversion to pinacol, the low inherent viscosities of 0.03–0.06 of the polypinacols implied the presence primarily of oligomers.
