Abstract
Electrochemical reduction of 4,4β²,βdiacetyldiphenylethane at mercury in 80% ethanol/1__M__ potassium acetate produced the pinacols in high yield by the oneβelectron/one proton reduction of the carbonyl groups. Although polarographic analysis indicated essentially complete conversion to pinacol, the low inherent viscosities of 0.03β0.06 of the polypinacols implied the presence primarily of oligomers.
